With the potential for a long trip this summer and more than likely being in remote areas with little to no coverage I have been looking at these little Garmin units. More so as an SOS and to allow family o keep track of progress.
Anyone messed around with these Garmin units?
My buddy has one for when he goes elk hunting. He liked it and used it a bit. He was texting me through to ask about wheeling trails in colorado.

The only thing he didn't like was when you text people, YOU have to be the one to initiate the conversation. You can't give someone the # and they text you first.

I thought I read where you can talk back and forth through the app. pair it with your phone and access the app that way.
I could be wrong on that but it was how I understood it.

You are probably looking at a newer version of it than the one he has.

But it's definitely better to have one than to not have one.

Finally dug out my old handheld FRS/GMRS radios that I used to play with as a kid and was able to test the truck's GMRS radio. All worked as designed and the audio is crystal clear. Love it! Maybe tomorrow or the next day I'll have a friend take one and drive around and see how far you can communicate with from little handheld to the truck and vice versa

New GMRS license fee set to $35 for 10 years is supposed to go into effect soon. Glad I was lazy and put off getting the license!

They keep pushing the change date on this. I am not sure why but hopefully they do it soon.

Recommendations on multi-purpose budget walkie talkies?

Looking to get my son some for his birthday and there are lots of options and lots of features. I know I want a locking feature so that he can't change the channel. I'm sure they will get used mostly to talk between bedrooms, but could be used to talk between the house and community pool (guestimate of 3/4 mile).

Color: I don't really care about color, but something bright would be best. Both from a finding it standpoint and also because it will be primarily for the kids.
Screen Lock: definitely want this.
VOX: either a really good or really bad thing depending on use. I get the sense that it can be turned on/off, so probably prefer to have it.
NOAA alerts: from an out camping standpoint, I think this would be good. However, I don't want them randomly going off if they leave them on and fall asleep. I'm on the fence about NOAA alerts and leaning toward not having them.
FRS/GMRS: I get the sense they all work in both FRS and GMRS, but not all of them advertise that. True?
Range: I'm seeing stuff anywhere from 1 to 32 miles. The budget ones seem to advertise up to 3 miles. If accurate, that should be plenty sufficient.
Battery saving and/or TOT (Time out Timer): definitely prefer this, as I assume they will get left on regularly.
Privacy codes: I can see benefit

Nothing says I can't just get them ones to play with and upgrade later for more functional use, but I'd prefer to kill 2 birds if possible.

Cheap-o just play comms:

Slightly less junky:

Probably reasonable quality:
FRS and GMRS: Amazon.com: Motorola T100TP Talkabout Radio, 3 Pack: Electronics

About as nice as I think I'd care to buy:

I assume that all FRS radios will communicate with other FRS radios as long as you have the same channel and privacy code. If that is the case, I could get the kids the cheap-o ones and get a slightly nicer radio for myself so that I can listen in if needed.

Looks like all FRS use standard frequencies, so I'm just gonna get the kids the cheap ones and hope they don't suck. Then maybe get a nicer one down the road.

I bought some FRS from Baofong back in like 2016, they are 8 watt. Well over what the FCC allows. I just went and looked and they are no longer sold. I do recall in the comments people saying they are illegal. :) They do work pretty good though, haven't really tried to see how far they would go though. They do have a similar model that has been reduced to 3-5 watts. Doesn't have a screen though.

Oh and speaking of comms... I had some Amazon cash (did a return and must have selected gift card) so I bought the 18-22 Technicians study guide. Gonna go get certified after what.. 10 years. LOL

Just learn Ohm's Law and you'll pass. Probably 80% of the questions on my practice tests and actual test were all Ohm's Law related.

I did that for when I was going to take the test many moons ago. Thanks for the reminder.
