Fitting 3 car seats safely

Help me find a solution.

The problem: we are about to have 3 kids under 3. To make this more universal, let's just say that we will have 3 kids in car seats for the foreseeable future.

We currently own a 2nd gen double cab Tacoma and a 5th gen 4Runner w/0 3rd row.

The objective: *safely* utilize one (or both) of our current vehicles once the 3rd child has arrived.

Both the Tacoma and the 4Runner have 2 sets of LATCH anchors to secure car seats. I have read that some people have utilized the seat belts instead of using the LATCH anchors and have squeezed 3 car seats on the back bench. I'm not entirely opposed to this option, but would likely not make much sense for long distance travel. In this scenario, our oldest would have to get in the middle seat since she is almost able to buckle herself in. The middle seat would face forward and the two side seats would be rear-facing...at least for now.

We've also looked at some bigger (used) SUVs like the Sequoia, Land Cruiser/LX 570, etc. The 3rd row is a nice feature, but I'm still not sure it makes sense. To access the 3rd row, one of the seats in the 2nd row needs to slide/fold forward. This means that we still wouldn't be able to have 2 car seats on the second row since one would likely prevent the access to the 3rd row. The advantage to one of these, they have 3 sets of LATCH anchors on the second row. This means that they are designed to hold 3 car seats. This might work well for shorter distances around town. The downside is that each kid is still relatively cramped and right up on the other. My daughter is very well behaved, but I'd hate to stick her next to a screaming infant and tell her to deal with it. I wouldn't want someone to do that to me....

Another potential with the bigger SUVs is to get one with captains chairs in the middle row. This would allow easier access to the 3rd row, but might require the removal of a center console.

We've thought about another 4Runner with the 3rd row, but that still presents the problems with access to the 3rd row. We've thought about finding a donor vehicle and swapping the rear cargo area with one that has a 3rd row, or purchasing the 3rd row new. (I kind of hate to get rid of the Trail Edition) However, that presents other obstacles....the second row doesn't slide to allow easier access. I don't believe there are side curtain airbags in the rear cargo area, etc.

The popular suggestion is to get a minivan....this is what we are trying to avoid.

Thoughts?

Buddy of mine has an F150 and he had 3 car seats (well two boosters and a car seat) in the back. Lots of room in those things. If they are any indication then Expedition size SUV's would be plenty of space. My neighbor has Buick Enclave (I think).. its the big SUV from them, seats 7. Very roomy inside. Its just a jelly bean shape.

Also...Keep the 4R and sell off the Tacoma.

I’ve had two expeditions, a 2011 and a 2015. They have plenty of room inside for what your wanting to do because I’ve done it. The 2015 had electric folding 2nd/3rd row which was nice plus if you get a 2015+ is comes with the 3.5 ecoboost standard and you will be getting 20+mpg on the highway with tons of power.

Yeah, my wife would like to avoid anything shaped like a jelly bean...or a van, which eliminates a lot of crossovers.

This would be my preference, but we actually use the truck bed pretty regularly.

You just added that to the list of vehicles to check out. 20+ MPG is hard to pass up. The gas mileage and cost of the Sequoia and LC are the biggest factors against.

Go with a Ford then if you want truck bed + room. I’m 6’2” and have a ton of rear seat leg room in my 250, plus they have 3 sets of those tie downs and if you get the actual crew cab version in 150/250 etc you can flip up the front console and seat 6.

The main objective here is to do it with what we have though. I will certainly consider the Ford if we have to get something new. We recently went down to a single income, so a new purchase is not ideal.

I’d get the oldest in a booster seat asap then cause them car seats take up a ton of space and they are a pain when you have them strapped in next to each other.

Yeah you're gonna find out how shitty the used truck market is right now/has been for awhile. You'll find super high mileage trucks that are $6-$10K off what their sticker price was. My two co-workers both researched for months to find a good used truck at a reasonable price and after months of looking, they both ended up buying new trucks off the lot.

You might keep the Tacoma and get a used LX 470 or a land cruiser.

A couple of years back we rented a 2016 2WD Suburban to take 6 adults with 6 pieces of luggage to New Orleans for a long week. On the highway there and back we were getting 22mpg at 80+mph. It was also a breeze to drive and I had a hard time staying awake because it was a comfortable ride. I was seriously impressed with the suburban...but it's a chevy and I'm pretty sure the alternator was dying already based off the battery gauge. lol My boss has a 4WD 2015 Suburban and he gets around 16-18 on the highway.

Why did you get rid of them? Just curious. My buddy's wife has a 2011 Expedition and they're thinking of getting rid of it because it's so slow and gets really shitty gas mileage.

Traded the 2011 in on the 2015 just because the mileage was getting up on it, but it had the 5.4 and it got 16-17 city 20+ hwy. The 2015 never saw less then 18 mph and I regularly got 22-23 on the highway. I traded it in on my 250 because I wanted one and we didn’t really need the room since the kids have gotten older and stay home most of the time and I bought my wife a mustang.

I'm also looking into possibly getting something with more room. We only have two kids, but the Tacoma was getting quite cramped with just the one on long trips. It just doesn't seem like the Tacoma will cut it with the second now in the infant seat.

Thinking about F-150/Silverado/Tundra maybe 4-Runner, but then I lose a bed.

Still have to find time to actually get out and physically try them out.

The whole "no bed" thing with a 4Runner really is not a big deal. I find I need a trailer 2-3 times a year. The secure/ dry storage from the cargo area in the 4Runner comes in handy almost daily

This is what I'm worried about. :(

With 2 kids the Tacoma is definitely lacking on road trips. Way too small interior. We've been taking the wife's 4Runner on long trips. It's just right.

So we put an offer in on a Certified Pre Owned 2018 Sequoia 4x4 Platinum. In the end, we weren't able to come to terms on the price. At this point, I'm thinking that I might trade the Tacoma in on a minivan and drive the 4Runner myself.

I suppose getting lumber from the hardware store will fit in the back of the van fairly easily. For things that require the bed of a truck, I can likely borrow my cousin's trailer.

Regardless what we do, we will likely be getting a minivan. I tried pushing for keep the 4R and the Taco and we just buy a crapper minivan that we can plan to dump in 5 years. Wife didn't go for that idea.
