I have a 7900 - I love it. I like having the other channels for a po-po scanner. Sean is right. A Chinese hand-held and an external antenna you will get 80%. Then when you buy a mobile, you will have one to give to your 'homeboy.'

Now I'm leaning towards the ftm100dr instead. I narrowed it down to that one and the 7900. I think playing with digital modes could be fun and it still does everything an analog radio would

Yea, my Army Reserve drill schedule for next FY isn't posted yet and if drill falls on either of the 2 first weekends in October I'd have to drop out. There's my caveat.

Here lies the dilemma. This weekend is my son's birthday weekend, his friends and then family party will have to be delayed until the following weekend if he's coming with me on this trip. So I can't have drill on the second weekend either unless I want to disturb the balance in the force here at home.

I get my 20 year letter next January, but with an additional 2 years on my contract that's tied to a bonus, I may be screwed until 2020 unless I can get out before the last payment on my bonus hits next January or I just payback the money.

Totally makes sense, hang in there for the 20 for sure, a matching TSP will start next FY, take advantage of that. I also hope you already made the election a few years back on your transfer of education benefits to your kids, takes 6 years commitment for that to become effective. You can call me offline for possible reduction scenarios, I'm still in touch with a few AGRs to get real answers, not the retention responses that we were trained to maintain the force.

The 20yr letters for on the Reserve side usually show up the next following month after the anniversary(pay process) and depending on you, your admin and HRC expect another 30 to 90 days processing of retirement packet.
