In the time that I've been in my present role, my team mate has gotten 2 promotions. When I started, we had equal titles. About a year and a half in, he got the Sr. added to his title. That's all well and good, because he deserved it. On Wednesday, he was promoted to Manager. This also makes sense, because he's been doing the manager's job for pretty much the entire time that I've been here.
In the meantime, I've gotten several high value certifications, implemented several new systems to bolster our security posture, developed or updated procedure documentation, maintain a high service level, and handle the majority of the "daily" tasks. I certainly think that I've earned the Sr. title, but the new manager indicated that he felt I had a ways to go before earning that title in a meeting I had with him yesterday. He did say that he wants to get me there sooner than later and that all I really need is exposure to some of our other systems. He also said that he was going to work hard to get me exposure to those other systems.
I've been asking to have a more hands-on role with many of those systems for 2 years and have always been told "Don't worry about those, that's his responsibility."
I guess that's the end of my vent session. I feel like I've reached the height of my potential in my current role. I got my fingerprints done the same day I was told that he was being promoted to manager. I'm hopeful to be able to put in my notice and let him know that I'm adding the Sr. to my title in advance of his timeline.
