can you chamfer them or will it pull more away?
I drilled then countersunk all the holes before I screwed my steps and with the soft wood it was not fun. I had to decrease drill bit dia and go to a brand new sharper countersink so it wouldn't pull splinters up. Also used a hand screwdriver to set them the final inch or so to protect the threads oh and I used liquid soap to lube the screws like we used to do way back in the day. With all that I'm coming to realize soft wood sucks regardless of what you do
Chamfer the shelf holes? They are pretty shallow, so I'll leave them as is and just sand over them. Plus, the pins are pretty shallow too.
My wife asked about running the router over some of the shelf edges so that they wouldn't be so rigid, but I kind of like how it looks (or will look when finished.
All screws were countersunk and I hid them behind the channels where the permanent shelves are installed. Since the entire depth is under 16", I didn't have 2 studs to go into, which is why the back support has a pocket hole. That'll give it stability when weight is added.
My only real complaint is the bowing of the top board. I remember it having a slight bow in it when I bought it, but I think sitting in the garage with the wet weather we've had just allowed it to curl in on itself a little more that I think it should have. Thanks, big box store wood!
