Thats cool. I don't know about all those, but I know the local high school has a pretty nice shop class. Neighbor kid took some welding classes there. But its a 6A school so it better have some extras.

A larger car dealer sponsors the auto shop. Legit dealer quality shop and bays. My wife did some training there 1 day and she said the vice principle was so eager and enthusiastic to take the teachers on a tour. He was saying they have a waiting list for students and have a zero tolerance for skipping class and behavior since there is another kid waiting. Also said they have a hard time hiring mechanics or welders to teach classes since most in those professions dont want to take a pay cut to become a teacher.

It would have been awesome to get into CNC work in high school. It is good to see some schools coming back around to legit vocational training in high school so the kids graduate with at least something.

I completely agree. I used the pic of that syllabus as an example of how we should be doing things when one of my left wing high school buddy's was spouting off about free secondary schooling on fakebook last weekend. No need to go into massive debt for "academic" secondary education when the skilled trades will pay you to go to school to get a hands on education.

I wish the program was available when I was in high school. I had no desire to go to college and no direction of what I wanted to do in school or with a degree. Only made it 3 semesters. Technical training programs would have been a welcomed option 18 years ago.
My wife is 1 of the very few people I know who actually use their degree in their professional life.

We were lucky and had vo-tech in our county 20+ years ago. Pretty good one at that. I should of gone because high school was not for me. I spent half of my day in our building trades class then would go home. Ended up getting kicked out because I was working or goofing off with derelict parents. Luckily I was dating a student teacher who cut me off when I got the boot. She said she refused to date a drop out. Man could she sucks a golf ball through a garden hose. She ended up finding a school that would take me and I ended up graduating 1 year late. Then wasted the next 4 years going to community college at night while working two jobs for a 2 year criminal justice degree. By the time I got a call from the local PD I had just bought a house and was making 2x that of a rookie cop in the glass industry. Hindsight being 20/20 I would of taken the pay hit then so I could of retired with a nice pension by the time I was 48. Now Ill be working until I'm dead.

My degree has helped keep friends and myself out of jail so while I think it was a total waste of time/$$$ maybe it wasn't.

Junior year Auto I and woodshop

Between Juinior and Senior year at Vatozone for about 8 months, then Lansdowne-Moody Company New Holland & Kubota, parts and attachment assembly, light maintenance for about a year.

Senior year Auto II, and metalshop

6 months after graduation, 2 days after Christmas Fort Knox boot camp then Fort Eustis, rotary aircraft school for electronics, avionics and weapon systems, then Crew Chief, Dart Team member and also TI.

After all that, to this day I still miss working at Landsdown-Moody great folks, nice tools and the job was entertaining.

Started trolling one of my socialist buddy's last night with my opinion and facts to back it up regarding free secondary academic educations. This morning the debate turned into him name calling then I think he deleted the post. All I know is I couldn't post any more facts into the thread . I don't understand why people get so angry when they take on a flawed tact then get called out for it. My simple thought was that we should never put another story on top of a flawed foundation. Fix K-12 first while pushing kids to tech schools. US citizens should never be "above" a hard days work outside an air conditioned office. We need both blue and white collar workers and can't focus our entire population on either one. Past 30+ years the push has been away from skilled labor. Someones gotta feed those people, build their houses, patrol their streets, keep everything running, etc. Seems like our culture shits on the service industries a little too much for my liking. Need to knock their egos down a peg or two from time to time IMHO.

I work in IT and there are lots of guys I work with that are surprised I do not subcontract my cable pulls and grunt work. It will take a shift in culture to appreciate hands on work before it comes back around.

It will take a shift in culture to appreciate hands on work before it comes back around.

I am like that as well. Can always sub stuff out, but rather handle it all in house. The more hands in the cookie jar the more problems. + it's easier to deal with my own guys vs a sub.
