2001 4Runner build/fix log

Getting a list together of things that need attention this summer when I can shut down the 4R for a week for maintenance. Right now I am probably just looking to hit some high mileage maintenance items and a few simple upgrades.

1. Swap the stock 2 hole fuel injectors for earlier model 4 hole injectors
2. Finish the winch wiring to get it fully functional
3. Install new radiator (current one has over 100k miles and is starting to weep a bit at the top)
4. Rear axle UCA bushings replacement

So will start getting the parts together. The only part that will kind of suck is the injectors because I have to take the supercharger off. I will do a full maintenance on the s/c while I have it off.

Are rebuild kits available for the SC again? When I looked into it, the bearings were nowhere to be found and no one knew if they'd be available again.

There are rebuild places that still stock the bearings and parks needed to properly rebuild the nose cone. I will probably just ship off the nose cone to have it checked and rebuilt by a shop. It is not a real hard process; but for a couple hundred bucks for parts and labor it is a no brainer considering how expensive these things are becoming. The bearings and other parts are almost $80 alone so a little extra for the parts plus install is not bad. Plus I have a spare nose cone I can ship off ahead of time.

Saving notes on rear shock relocation. The biggest goal is to swap from a stud shock to an eyelet shock - more options and cheaper. Not looking to make any radical changes. The last time I changed out my rear shocks the stock nightmare mounting points were more than a pain the ass to get to.

Common adapter for the stock location inside the frame rails. People say you can swap the shocks out without dropping the spare but they must be extremely tiny.

Adapter welded to the outside of the frame. A tape measure can be used to ensure same height for full stuff/drop and ride height.

Back to the fix side of the thread - replaced stock starter with Oreilly's Ultima starter. It was not my first choice; but it worked for my time frame. Not to self in the future; drop the UCA first and the starter comes out nice and easy. At Oreilly's they bench tested the starter (training a new guy) and the bearings were destroyed inside it. You could hear them grinding and almost could not turn it by hand.

Now on to the prep list for Death Valley in a few months.

DV prep? If you run with @TacoXpo make sure you have remote resivior shocks and plan to rebuild them after the trip.

- Shouldn't need to but you could always bring an IR temp reader to see how hot your shocks get.

It wont matter; not like I will pull over and let them have a break anyways. Ig they are weak they will fail and be replaced.

Today was a good test of the rig at highway speeds. I did a day trip to outside of San Antonio. It is 3.5 hours one way and lots of highway. On the way down I averaged 16.2 mpg running 75-80 mph. On the way back I was right into a good headwind at 80 mph and I averaged 12.5 mpg.

Overall I can live with it or I could slow down.

The plug kit was recommended from a guy at work; they use it on the equipment at work with good success. I plan to test it out on an old tire setup I have that I am about to swap out anyways. The MaxTrax pins are for the Treds; they are cheaper than the Treds options and overall will be an easier on/off as needed.

The plug kit was recommended from a guy at work; they use it on the equipment at work with good success. I plan to test it out on an old tire setup I have that I am about to swap out anyways. The MaxTrax pins are for the Treds; they are cheaper than the Treds options and overall will be an easier on/off as needed.

Those tire kits are pretty good, but I would still carry some of the traditional plug kit and glue.
Some of the thick truck tire/treads can be challenging with those co2 guns.

It is a pull through plug. I skipped the CO2 option because of the issues with them. OBA will be more useful.

2) Rerouted the houses to the transmission cooler and bypassed the radiator
3) New gear oil in the front and rear diffs
4) Greased every zerk


RTT and awning back on the rack. Just a few more things to do before the trip - roof rack mounts and antenna mag base.

I need to take a look out your trans cooler setup. I need to install mine when I do the shift kit and new fluid.

I really thought about it but did good to complete what I did. My allergies are kicking my ass after that Florida trip. Probably going to the doc tomorrow or Tuusday for some meds.
