Side of my head is feeling the HiLift hit this morning.

Getting my sisters car back together after she ran into a curb. Damage was minimal. Two new tires and a bent strut. Of course to change the strut you have to tear half the damn car apart. Got the strut in, just working on getting everything else back in place.

I'm just glad its drizzly and overcast today.. I didn't feel like looking at the sun on my drive into work.

Neighbor got the new cab stripped out. Good news! There is a seam directly behind the seats to follow with a grinder. Plan is to heat up the seam seal and remove. Then cut there. Once it's tacked and the sheet is welded as good as possible with a but weld. Then lay a piece of 1/8x 2.5 flat stock over and weld it along both sides. Plan for rockers is to cut longer and use a crimping tool to create lap joints to allow the metal to lay on itself and get some cleco(sp?) fasteners to hold it in place. A-pillar is still unknown as to the best way.

Im sure you can find some info about the A pillars if you research a cab chop on classic cars.

Good idea. I'm just worried about crash strength. Butt welds are not known for their strength. I'm thinking once it's apart to drill some holes and rosette weld a couple pieces of plate down the channels.

We have the spare cab of the neighbors truck all stripped down. On the original truck we have removed the bed and stripped out everything but the drivers seat and carpet. This weekend is the big cut. Cut the spare cab in half, remove the front portion and then do the same on the original cab. Swap the good cab onto the old cab. Then realign them and I get to weld it all back together. No pressure.

We did cut a section of the A-pillar out of the donor cab to see how thick it was.. its not bad. I will be adding a section of 1/8" flat plate along two side for strength. Inside the channel for strength. So that's a little relief.

And here I still haven't replaced missing bolts in my skid and r&r my driveshaft to see if that gets rid of a shutter I have. Feel lazy and tired at the same time. Working a lot but little on my truck. Reminds me of a saying my brother used to say about his his employees in the Caribbean: "They aren't lazy. They were just born tired."

Started cutting on the "new" cab for the neighbors truck. Basically making it lighter and seeing what we are working with. I ran air hose over to their house and pulled my plasma over to help a little.. Also let us use an air hammer to separate panels easier.

Damage we are fixing


New cab cut up and laying back so we can figure out next steps. I welded in a piece of tube to support the cab when it's laying flat.


More tomorrow. Hope to get the new cab cut where we want and go from there

Also. Spot welds suck. Spent an hour cutting out spot welds with a carbide spot welds cutter. Him and I. Made a small dent in the number of them and we haven't even started on the wrecked truck. It will be the nightmare part!!
