What have you done to someone else's ride lately?

This was also an 8.4.

What third was it? 8 or 8.4? One of the guys I know blew out his 8.4 with the ol TW burn out mod. 1 tire was on the road and 1 was not. Slammed the gas and by by 8.4. it was the first 8.4 I had seen destroyed.

8.4 doing the TW burn out mod. I do not think this one was a tire slam victim though; just heavy continuous abuse. @RichardB23 could tell more.

Lol I've destroyed 3 8.4s and anot axle shaft, they just didn't like 37s and lots of skinny pedal. Hell I think silverback ended up with my best one, factory 4.56 gears and a lock rite, was the only one that I couldn't tear up. Now I'm stuck with a warped 14 bolt

I once heard a story about an auto manufacturer. They were developing a special edition of one of their trucks. It was well know within the development team, on such vehicle with a certain diff, not to transition from dirt to pavement with wheels spinning as it would tend to get a ring and pinion. :(

:shifty:

I used to go through e-locker r&ps every 9 months (I baby my truck). IIRC I changed mine out to an 8.4 (Sierra Gears, new bearings and ARB) in 2011 and have not had a problem with that ever since. :) I call it, the E-Locker Delete mod. :)

Tell me how that works out. Have you measured all of your u joint angles?

It looks pretty much like a single piece drive shaft. I will have to defer to Steven to get the angle measurements.

Not a single piece DS.. single does not have a carrier bearing. I'm assuming someone is holding the ass-end of the DS above the pinion on the hogs head.

Oh wait.. the left side is the transfercase. My bad. Looks like that carrier bearing won't live long. Has anyone ever angled the carrier bearing mounts? That seems steep.

I will get the angles off my stock Tacoma but it is only 2wd so I am not sure it will be a complete apples to apples comparison. I will see if I can get Steven to do the same tomorrow. @italynstylion

This swap is pretty well documented for having a good success rate on other forums so I am interested to see how well/long this lasts. We went for a test drive and it did remove all the vibrations that he was having. The Toyota dealer he took it to said he needed a new transmission.

My only concern is the carrier bearing bushing appears to be popping out the front side. Might be normal... I haven't had a carrier bearing in 9 years.. so I can't recall what stock looks like.

Yeah but doesn't look right. But hey... have him report back in 20k miles. I'm probably wrong.. wife has already told me that once today so its not the first time.

Yes, I have seen that on TW and I know one guy that plans on installing one. The more I do with Toyota and a vehicle contractor, the more I like some of the Toyota product. I did a assessment of mine (IIRC you want a minimum of 1* angle on the u-joints to keep them lubricated and I don't think any of mine were more than about 3.5-4* after I put a 2.5* shim on the rear axle housing. Some say the angle shouldn't be more than about 7.

I was and still am flattered... I am certain that you like the idea of not worrying about it any longer. How long did it take for you to not have any anxiety that you were going to have to send it back for a rebuild? lol It has been a while since I've had the third out. I do need to do a preventive inspection of wear and reseal the ARB seals.

I checked with Steven and he said the new carrier bearing is pretty much like a drop bracket. It does appear to have a few degrees of angle at the u joint; but it is tough to see in the pic.

The carrier bearing looks like it needs to be shimmed so that it doesn't have to 'work' so hard.
