Well that was fun, hopefully it resolves my CEL so I can get it inspected since it's overdue by 2 months lol. Getting it unwedged from the crossmember and where my shocks were was fun. Had to remove muffler to get the canister suction line removed. About a 2 hour job, thankful for the 1" body lift otherwise I'd have to drop the tank and/or remove the bed.

Evap Canister. I drilled a hole in mine installing my toolbox. It threw a CEL. I knew what I did. Luckily the hole was from the pilot hole and tiny. I got my finger up there and felt it. Threw some gas tank sealant on it and problem solved. That was 14 years ago. LOL

What is that box?

It is the charcoal canister assembly, part of the Evaporative Emission System. Contains the vacuum pump, pressure sensor, and vent valve to perform a vacuum test on the fuel tank/lines to ensure no leaks. When it fails, causes a CEL and you can't pass inspection (at least in NJ)

I need to go down that evap canister route with my 2001 4Runner. I debated just trying to do the hoses but that is still a bunch of work. I might as well do it right the first time. It just is going to suck to do it once or twice.

I was going to get a used one for cheaper on ebay, but the amount of pain in the ass to change it, seems worth it to just get a new one. $250 shipped from McGeorge Toyota. Was kind of painful but hoping this one lasts a while. I've read that topping off your gas tank can cause this, as gas can enter the canister and damage the vacuum pump. I'm sure taking my truck through the swamp water over the years also likely contributed to its failure lol

Ordered some goodies for mine today.
Midland MXT275 radio bundle
Also some new tires. Went with the Yokohama MT in 295/70/17. Wanted them in 285/75/17 but they were $336 each and the 295 I got for $207.
Is it back in stock now? I was gonna order one and it was back ordered.

I thought that was you on TW. Most informative post on that site in years. So if I can over simplify your post, you replaced just this part: 2005-2012 Toyota Tacoma Vapor Canister 77740-04020 | Toyota Parts ?

that was me indeed. I try to add some sanity to the fucktardetry that is TW. Yes I only ordered the charcoal canister itself, my filter looked to be in good shape. All that secondary filter does is draw air through it during the purge and vacuum cycle, there is nothing to “fail” for it, so as long as the hoses aren’t rotten and filter isn’t clogged all you should need is the canister. The purge VSV is easy to access and can be replaced later if that is your issue. It’s also easy to test the purge VSV to eliminate that as the cause. 99%of what can fail in the system is in that evap canister assembly.
